The Vigo County Parks and Recreation Board has approved the acquisition of more than 800 acres from Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE). Our partners at WTHI-TV in Terre Haute report the deal is valued at $50,000. The property could be turned into hiking trails or fishing and hunting grounds.

Some concerns has been raised over environmental safety of the land. Vigo County Parks and Recreation Superintendent Kara Kish says the Indiana Department of Environmental Management has deemed the site full remediated.

The department says half of the funds have already been raised through donations.

Pfizer closed its Terre Haute plant in 2009 after six decades in the city.
