At 20, MD Logistics Looks Forward

The company serves the life sciences and pharmaceutical

As Plainfield-based MD Logistics marks 20 years in business, one of its founders says the company is eyeing the possibility of another location. Chief Executive Officer Mark Sell says it may be in the U.S. or even abroad. The global third-party logistics provider started with seven employees in 1996 and now has more than 200. MD Logistics will be featured on this weekend’s edition of Inside INdiana Business Television.

Officials say revenue has doubled in seven years’ time, capped off by a record last year. One reason for the growth has been the strength of the state’s life sciences sector, which BioCrossroads says has an annual statewide economic impact of $62 billion. In October, the company detailed a $2.5 million expansion driven by what MD Logistics describes as a "thriving" pharmaceutical sector.

Pharmaceutical Operations Supervisor Theresa Robinson has been with the company since its early years and says "in pharmaceutical operations we started out with one sit down fork truck, and now having equipment totaling over 25 reach trucks, order pickers, floor scrubbers and scissor lifts."

MD Logistics has also recently completed expansion of a 60,000 square-foot cold chain cooler and says it is ready for a U.S. Food and Drug Administration serialized traceability mandate that is set to kick in next year. These measures, the company says, will allow it to better serve customers into the future, particularly for secure storage of "increasingly prevalent" biologic and injectable medications for the pharma industry.
