Indianapolis, Ind. — Legislation authored by State Sen. Phil Boots (R-Crawfordsville) to legalize direct wine sales to Hoosiers passed in the Senate Committee on Public Policy today by a vote of 9-0.
Under current law a consumer must visit a winery and have a face-to-face transaction in order to verify their age before that winery can directly sell and ship their wine to the consumer. Senate Bill 113 removes this face-to-face requirement, but keeps important safeguards like age verification to ensure that minors will not gain access to alcohol.
“This is common-sense legislation that not only supports free-market principles, but also lifts unnecessary restrictions levied on local wineries,” Boots said. “Removing the face-to-face transaction requirement will give Hoosier wine consumers more choices, grow the customer base for Indiana wineries and move our state into alignment with the vast majority of other states.”
Boots said his legislation is especially beneficial for smaller wineries that cannot afford to use a wholesaler and sell their product on local retailer’s shelves.
SB 113 now moves on to the full Senate for further consideration.
