AAA points to the recent unscheduled maintenance at BP’s Whiting Refinery, which had driven up prices.
AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge Report shows prices in Indiana fell 21 cents in the last week. In Ohio, average prices have dropped 22 cents. Hoosiers can now expect to pay around $2.74 for self-serve regular unleaded.
The Whiting Refinery is one of the largest in the nation and late in 2013, all major units involved in the more than $4 billion modernization effort in Whiting were reactivated. The upgrade is considered the largest privately-funded project of its kind in state history. It allowed the operation to process heavier crude from locations such as Canada.
AAA says prices throughout the country continue to be lower than they were last year, as crude oil prices have fallen. International forces keeping prices down include oversupply and concerns about the health of the Chinese economy. The organization says major U.S. crude oil benchmarks reached their lowest levels since March 2009 at the end of last week.
