Indiana’s two largest state universities are starting the fall semester with a record number of attendees. Indiana University Bloomington says it is welcoming its largest-ever class of first-year students, nearly 8,300 based on preliminary figures. Of that number of first-year students, 4,600 come from Indiana, also a new high mark for the school.

Purdue University expects at undergraduate enrollment of nearly 34,000, the largest in school history. Enrollment for first year students is 8,000, down from last year’s figures.

The first day of classes on the West Lafayette campus was last Monday. Classes begin this coming Monday in Bloomington.

The universities say enrollment of a student does not guarantee they show-up on campus. That census to get a more accurate count will take place next month at both schools.
