Representative Susan Brooks (R-5) says her fourth term in Congress will be her last. In a letter on her website, Brooks says she is ready to "slow down and begin a new chapter" and spend more time with family. She was first elected in 2012 and previously served as chairwoman of the House Ethics Committee.

In her letter, Brooks outlined some of the accomplishments she said mean most to her, including helping craft an overhaul of Congress’ sexual harassment policies and working on measures involving national security and fighting the opioid epidemic. She says she authored eight bills that passed through Congress, including the recent reauthorization of the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness and Advancing Innovation Act, designed to make the U.S. better-prepared for natural or man-made disasters.

Brooks says, although she expects much conjecture about the decision, she is confident the next Republican nominee in the 5th District will have "the same comfortable margins I have had." She says she will work hard to "guarantee another Republican victory" in the district.

Indiana Democratic Party Chairman John Zody issued a statement disagreeing, suggesting the decision "reaffirms just how quickly the political landscape is shifting toward Hoosier Democrats in places like the Indianapolis suburbs."

Brooks is the guest on the Indiana Chamber of Commerce’s most recent EchoChamber podcast. You can hear the conversation by clicking here.
