Louisville & Indiana Railroad and Vancouver, Washington-based Great Western Malting Company took months of planning for the 33-railcar facility located at LIRC’s railyard.
Representatives from both companies and the city of Jeffersonville gathered for a ribbon cutting ceremony at the new facility, which Great Western was responsible for building under a long-term lease from LIRC.
“This is a big extension of what we’re already doing elsewhere,” says Great Western President Mike O’Toole. “The new transload will allow us to offer cost-effective, high quality service to customers around Louisville and northern Kentucky. This facility will definitely set the bar for delivery of this product.”
The facility features a covered, open-ended structure enclosing 90 feet of track with a concrete pad. A concrete pit below the structure allows conveyors to load trucks with malting grain for delivery. Great Western had already been looking to invest in the Louisville market before beginning talks with LIRC about the new facility in June of last year. The railroad delivered the first shipment of malting grain in July of last year and a second round of shipments went out in November.
