Schmitt, 65, is facing a theft charge.
Minkler says information was filed in late May that Schmitt was an assistant director and accountant for ATTIC Incorporated, which receives federal funding to help disabled community members. An investigation by the Evansville office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation found Schmitt transferred approximately $98,000 from the nonprofit to a personal account from May 1, 2018 to October 31, 2018.
“Violating the public trust will not go unpunished,” said Minkler. “Intentionally securing public funds for personal gain is unacceptable. This charge should serve as an example of the fate individuals who commit these crimes can expect.”
Schmitt faces a possible sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
