The effort aims to help communities reinvest in existing neighborhoods and improve quality of life through the local food economy.
The initiative is run by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. As part of the program, a team of agricultural, environmental, public health, and regional economic development experts will work with the Near East Area Renewal organization in Indianapolis, along with other community leaders, to set goals and identify local assets that can support the local food economy.
The EPA says NEAR wants to "increase access to affordable, healthy food while accelerating economic growth and neighborhood revitalization and putting former industrial spaces to use."
