As fans cheer on their favorite golfers during the Masters this weekend in Augusta, Indiana is spotlighting some of its popular golf courses throughout the state. The Indiana Office of Tourism Development last year relaunched the Pete Dye Golf Trail, seven courses designed by the man considered to be the father of modern golf course architecture.

The trail includes courses located in Indianapolis, West Lafayette, French Lick, and Monticello.

In an interview on Inside INdiana Business with Gerry Dick, Noelle Szydlyk, Director of Planning and Development for Sport Tourism and Outdoor Recreation for the IOTD, said the revamp was part of an effort to grow activity one of the state’s tourism assets.

"We were able to dedicate some specific funding to promote golf as a whole as well as to relaunch the trail," said Szydlyk. "That was done through website redevelopment, the Indiana Golf Guide and producing that internally which we hadn't been doing, and so really just putting a focus on how we can take this asset that we have and the challenges that they bring and ways we could get that out there to let people know that they can just come to Indiana.

Szydlyk says the hope is to grab a bigger slice of the $70 billion a year golf tourism business. She says many of the courses are taking advantage of the strong convention business in Indiana to attract new visitors.

Though I fully respect and agree with this results-oriented perspective on content, in practice it can be...
