New Life For Historic Madison Building
Historic Madison, Inc. has won Indiana Landmark’s 2019 Cook Cup for Outstanding Restoration for its four-year transformation of the iconic Shrewsbury-Windle House.The group partnered with Indianapolis-based RATIO Architects to create a plan to address repairs and adapt the property to host meetings, receptions, and events.
Aided by a $375,000 matching gift from the Jeffris Family Foundation, a $250,000 anonymous gift, a $50,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Madison & Jefferson County, $35,000 from the Jefferson County Historic Preservation Fund, and many individual donors, Historic Madison raised $2.2 million for the Shrewsbury-Windle House restoration.
Some of the renovations included replacing the roof and fixing water issues, cleaning and repointing masonry, restoring the home’s 1849 color scheme and installing a sympathetic ramp to make the first floor accessible.
“With this project, Historic Madison demonstrates the highest standards of restoration,” said Indiana Landmarks President Marsh Davis, in a news release. “And as a venue for community programs and events, the Shrewsbury-Windle House has taken on a new relevance beyond its iconic status as one of our nation’s most revered Greek Revival buildings.”
