Purdue Fort Wayne Receives $130K for Suicide Prevention
The Behavioral Health and Family Studies Institute at Purdue University Fort Wayne, in partnership with the Indiana Suicide Prevention Coalition has been awarded a $130,000 contract to lead suicide prevention and intervention initiatives across the state. The contract is funded by Indiana’s Department of Mental Health and Addiction and will be used by the 19 Indiana Suicide Prevention Coalitions across the state to reduce the stigma of help-seeking behaviors.
The funding will also support efforts to increase awareness by providing training sessions, presentations and speaking events.
“This contract gives us the funding to go out into the communities at the grass-roots level to let youth and adults know that getting help for mental health issues is a good thing,” said Jordan-Miles, director of the Behavioral Health and Family Studies Institute, in a news release. “We will also present and sponsor activities that raise awareness of warning signs and risk factors that an individual may be thinking of taking their own life, and how to help them step back from that edge. The bottom line is we want to save lives.”
The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline ‘1-800-273-TALK (8255)’ is free, confidential, and available 24/7.
