The sports-themed fundraising organization has launched Champ’s Charity Challenge, in which users can fill out brackets for the NCAA men’s college basketball tournament in the name of their charity of choice. The previous iteration of the program saw nonprofits competing in a tournament-style bracket of their own to see who could raise the most money.
In an interview with Inside INdiana Business, Brackets For Good Executive Director Matt McIntyre says the nonprofit saw a "need to pivot."
"We’re a software that’s a nonprofit at the same time and we realized that our program cost more than the resources we had available," said McIntyre. "So, what we needed to do was change the program to still do good, introduce people to giving in a fun way, but minimize our operational costs required to operate the program."
In the new program, users make a $20 donation to submit a prediction bracket. McIntyre says $10 of that will automatically go to the charity the user selects to support, $5 will go into the grand prize pool and the remainder goes to Brackets For Good to cover operational costs. The top 10 predictors will earn their charities a share of the grand prize pool, which is currently over $11,000.
McIntyre says they’ve seen more than 300 participants so far this year with a goal of nearing 1,000. He says, because this is a pilot year for the new program, the nonprofit is looking for feedback from users.
Brackets For Good launched with just one tournament in 2012 in Indianapolis and over the years, expanded to numerous cities throughout the country, as well as a nationwide tournament. McIntyre says the organization’s growth can be attributed to the leaders of nonprofits they strive to support.
"Without their assistance in promoting our programs, our unique approach to fundraising, or frankly how we’ve made fundraising fun, over the last several years, without them we wouldn’t be where we are today," said McIntyre. "This program this year is different than the traditional Brackets For Good tournament, but it’s certainly another way to raise funds and have some fun this March."
