The foundation says the funding will create a permanent endowment that will benefit generations of Indianapolis children.
The foundation is looking to raise $150,000 for the Next 50 Fund, which will support children’s reading and learning initiatives at the Indianapolis Public Library. Leaders gathered Tuesday at the Central Library in downtown Indianapolis, along with representatives from the Indiana Pacers, Indianapolis Colts and Indianapolis Indians to launch the campaign. Indiana Fever legend Tamika Catchings was on hand for the event.
The foundation says it is already more than halfway to meeting its goal. Roberta Jaggers, president of the Indianapolis Public Library Foundation, says they thought it was appropriate to think about the future for children in Indianapolis and how they are going to interact with information and books in the future.
Jaggers says the foundation wanted to create a flexible fund for the library to draw from to be able to fund its evolving efforts on behalf of children.
"In 1969, there is no way that our founders could’ve anticipated that one day children would be doing robotics at the library (or) they would be using e-books," said Jaggers. "So we take that same lesson looking forward in the future; we don’t know exactly how the library will need to serve children but we know there will be children. We know that they’ll be reading and that the library is going to have a really important role in fostering that love. So that’s the goal of the Next 50 Fund."
The Indy Library Foundation raises more than $2 million in corporate and individual support annually to support efforts such as the library’s Summer Reading Program, lectures from popular authors, and others. You can learn more about the Next 50 Fund by clicking here.
