The Palladium-Item reports the building was pulled this week from an auction of sites formerly owned by Wisconsin-based The Bon-Ton Stores Inc. while a local task force works to buy it.
The task force is being led by Wayne County Commissioner Ken Paust, who declined to provide more details to the publication about negotiations to acquire the building. The site had been a part of a previous auction, but the winning bidder decided not to move forward with the purchase.
Officials in the county are looking keep the property from turning into the same situation as the former Reid Hospital site, which fell into severe disrepair before eventually being demolished. Plans for the site have yet to be decided, though one developer has expressed interest in turning into a conference center.
