(NYSE: GM) for what the union claims is a breach of labor contract. The suit calls for the automaker to transfer nearly 700 employees who were laid off from an assembly plant in Ohio to a similar plant in Fort Wayne.
The UAW says GM is circumventing the contractual agreement by using temporary workers at the Fort Wayne plant. The union adds there are approximately 1,000 seniority employees on layoff nationwide, including those laid off from the Ohio plant, and many of them have applied for a transfer to the Fort Wayne facility.
"UAW members negotiated a binding agreement and we expect General Motors to follow the contract they agreed to and GM members ratified," UAW Vice President Terry Dittes said in a news release.
The Lordstown, Ohio plant is one of five that were set to be closed this year as part of GM’s planned reorganization effort. Our partners at WPTA-TV report that while the Fort Wayne plant was not included in the closures, it has been using temporary workers since the automaker launched a new pickup truck.
The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. You can connect to the suit by clicking here.
