The state's online one-stop business portal is continuing to expand its services. Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson's Office says INBiz, which aims to help businesses stay in compliance with state laws, is partnering with the Indiana Small Business Development Center to provide guidance to new business owners.

INBiz launched in 2016 and Lawson says the portal's popularity has grown to the point that many entrepreneurs have reached out for advice beyond how to meet state laws and regulations. She says the INBiz call center is unable to provide much of the legal advice requested by potential business owners, which led to the partnership with the SBDC.

"With nearly half a million companies employing 1.2 million Hoosiers, small businesses play an important role in sustaining Indiana’s economic momentum," said Elaine Bedel, president of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation. "We’re thrilled to partner with INBiz and the Secretary of State’s office to continue delivering great government service and helping streamline operations for entrepreneurs seeking to launch and grow their dream businesses."

The SBDC, in partnership with the IEDC, has helped more than 300 new businesses get up and running in 2018, creating more than 1,200 jobs. Lawson's office says, with the new partnership, the goal is to increase that assistance in 2019.

INBiz also helped bring in additional revenue for the state in 2018. The Indiana Attorney General's office added its unclaimed property reporting requirement to the INBiz portal this year, which resulted in the collection of nearly $40 million in funding. Lawson's office says more business owners became aware of the filing requirement, which led to the increase.

    • Market Caps: What's in Your Portfolio?

Investors understand the importance of having a proper balance of large-, mid-, and small-cap companies in their stock portfolios. Unfortunately, there are no strict rules followed by index funds when categorizing by company size. When you "check under the hood" of your portfolio, you may discover you’re taking more (or less) risk than you intended! What Is Market Cap? Market capitalization, or market cap, is a term used to represent the size of a company.
