State Representative Joe Taylor (D-7) has announced his resignation from the Indiana House of Representatives. The South Bend representative, who was re-elected to his seat in November, says he is leaving to accept a job with the United Auto Workers International Union.

Taylor was first elected to represent the 7th district in 2016. He was the ranking Democrat on the House Employment, Labor and Pensions Committee and has served as president of UAW-Local 5 in South Bend since 2011.

In a statement, Taylor called his new position "a life-changing opportunity" and one he could not pass up.

“Unfortunately, it will require my full attention, and there is the potential we will have to move out of state in the very near future, so I will have to resign as state representative," said Taylor. "I cannot tell you how much of a privilege it has been to serve in the Indiana House. My commitment in my life has been to do everything in my power to improve the lives of all I am fortunate enough to represent, both in my work with the local UAW and as a state representative."

Taylor’s seat will be filled by an individual chosen at a meeting of 7th district precinct committee members, which the House Democratic Caucus says will be held in the "very near future."
