Notre Dame Taps Author, Speechwriter For Commencement

Subscribe NowPulitzer Prize-winning columnist and presidential speechwriter Peggy Noonan will deliver the 174th commencement address for the University of Notre Dame in the spring. Noonan will also receive an honorary degree during the May 19 ceremony.
Noonan began at CBS radio after graduating from Fairleigh Dickinson University, then became a speechwriter for the Ronald Reagan administration in 1984. She worked with Reagan on his speech delivered on the 40th anniversary of D-Day, along with his address to the nation following the Challenger explosion in 1986.
“Peggy Noonan is universally admired for the stirring prose, keen insight and the moral perspective of her commentary on America and the world,” said University President Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C. “I look forward to welcoming her to Notre Dame and hearing her address to our graduates.”
Noonan has penned her column "Declarations" in the Wall Street Journal since 2000, and won a Pulitzer for distinguished commentary in 2017. She also has authored nine books on American politics, culture and history.
The 2019 commencement ceremony will be held in Notre Dame Stadium.
