The White River State Park Development Commission says the first phase of the project came in over budget, which led to a redesign and a new bidding process.
The first phase of the $27 million project, plans for which were first announced in September, includes new restrooms on the north side of the venue, a permanent stage, and infrastructure improvements. That work was slated to be complete for the 2019 concert season and the WRSPDC says the restrooms will be finished on schedule.
"We are disappointed the permanent stage will not open for the 2019 concert season," said Carolene Mays-Medley, executive director of WRSPDC. “We worked diligently with the architect and construction manager to create a functional design visitors would enjoy that would also stay within budget. Visitors have routinely suggested we add more restrooms, so we chose to prioritize that phase of the renovation in order to meet an important need."
The remainder of the project’s first phase is being delayed one year. The second phase of the project is also slated to be complete in 2020. It includes transforming the stage into an open-air amphitheater with fixed seating, a VIP lounge, artist amenities and additional infrastructure improvements.
The project is being financed through a combination of state funding, philanthropic donations, and a commitment from Live Nation.
