The Indiana Department of Workforce Development says the state added 2,500 jobs last month and the labor force saw a net increase of more than 4,500 people.
The national unemployment rate dropped to 3.7 percent in September, which means Indiana’s unemployment has been equal to or lower than the national rate for nearly five years. According to figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Indiana’s labor force participation rate stands at 65.1 percent, which remains above the national rate of 62.7 percent.
The majority of the gains in private sector employment came from the trade, transportation and utilities sector, as well as the sector listed as "Other," which includes mining and logging, IT and other services. Those gains were partially offset by losses in manufacturing and private educational and health services.
Indiana continues to have the lowest unemployment of the surrounding states, all of which remain above 4 percent. Only Minnesota and Wisconsin have lower unemployment rates at 2.8 percent and 3 percent, respectively.
