GARY -

Gary/Chicago International Airport has officially opened its new general aviation U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility. The airport is now accepting international arrivals, meaning travelers from around the world no longer need to stop at another airport to clear customs.

Federal, city and airport officials cut the ribbon on the facility in August, however the first international flight, arriving direct from Denmark, landed at the airport October 7. Gary Airport Authority Chairman Tim Fesko says the facility opens the door to a whole new international market and services for the airport and its users.

The on-site CBP facility is the latest in a string of improvements for the Gary Airport, which includes an extended main runway completed in 2014 and the construction of an additional $2.5 million corporate hangar, which is expected to be complete next spring.
