Indy to Cut Ribbon on Lugar Plaza

INDIANAPOLIS -

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett will Thursday join city and community leaders to cut the ribbon on the new Richard G. Lugar Plaza at the City-County Building in downtown Indy. The $9 million plaza has been redesigned to hold up to 1,500 people for community events and programs.

Officials broke ground on the project in June 2017. Located on the south side of the CCB, the plaza features a large shade structure with leisure swings underneath, an interactive water feature, and artwork representing the various sister city relationships of Indianapolis. Other amenities include movable tables, chairs, and bike racks, as well as free public WiFi.

The city announced in November the plaza would be named in honor of former Senator Richard Lugar, who served two terms as mayor beginning in 1967. Lugar himself will be a part of the ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday, along with former Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard and Lilly Endowment Inc. Chief Executive Officer Clay Robbins.
