A legislative designation for the museum is part of the Senate-approved Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2018. The National Airmail Museum Act was introduced in August by Senator Todd Young (R-IN) and Senator Joe Donnelly (D-IN) and it involves Hangar 2 at Smith Field as the National Airmail Museum.
Young says the reauthorization, which also includes support for airport modernization, safety and air service improvements, will benefit Hoosiers. "I’m glad my bipartisan legislation to designate a national airmail museum in Fort Wayne was included in this authorization, and I look forward to seeing this project move forward."
The designation highlights the important role Smith Field and Indiana have played in the history of the bygone delivery system played in the state and the country. You can connect to more about the National Airmail Museum effort by clicking here.
