The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded a total of $5.3 million in grants for new buses in the cities of South Bend and Bloomington. The funding is part of more than $366 million awarded nationwide through the DOT’s Buses and Bus Facilities Infrastructure Investment Program.

South Bend will receive more than $4.9 million replace 12 buses that have exceeded their useful life. The DOT says the effort will improve safety and reliability while reducing operating costs for the South Bend Transportation Corp.

“We are honored to receive funding through the Buses and Bus Facilities Infrastructure Investment Program," said Amy Hill, chief executive officer of South Bend Transpo. "The replacement of buses that have exceeded their useful life is critical to Transpo’s ability to provide the vital connections to employment, healthcare, educational and recreational opportunities that are so important our community."

The city of Bloomington will receive more than $357,000 to purchase new electric buses and associated charging infrastructure. The DOT says the new buses will be the first for the Bloomington Public Transportation Corp. and will reduce maintenance costs and improve efficiency.
