The South Bend Tribune reports the purchase is part of a long-term plan to develop more than 20,000 acres into an industrial park near New Carlisle.
St. Joseph County Economic Development Director Bill Schalliol says four companies are expected to announce major projects in the area in the next several months, according to the publication. The county will purchase the property from Inland Steel Co.
Schalliol says the property was needed in order to relocate the Niespodziany Ditch and extend railroad tracks south from the Northfolk-Southern Railroad. The Tribune says the county plans to acquire several more properties needed to complete the ditch relocation before the end of the year.
Schalliol says the companies expected to announce projects could start operating next year and in 2020. He adds three of them have expressed interest in rail access.
