MOUNT VERNON -

The Port of Indiana-Mount Vernon is touting a record first half of 2018. Some 4.7 million tons of cargo passed through the Posey County hub, an all-time Indiana port record for the first six months of any year, and a 36 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Officials say the spike was fueled by demand for coal and agricultural products.

The previous record in Mount Vernon was 4 million tons in the first six months of 2016. The Ports of Indiana, which overseas the state's three ports in Mount Vernon, Jeffersonville and Burns Harbor, says the total tallied in Mount Vernon places it eighth among annual records with six months still to go in the year.

Port Director Phil Wilzbacher says "as the sixth largest inland port district in the country, this port serves a significant region of the Midwest by providing multimodal infrastructure for industries requiring access to river, rail and roadway logistics. It is very encouraging to see substantial growth continue to build over the past three years as our southwestern Indiana port serves as a hub for global and domestic markets."

The 544-acre site saw a rise in shipments of coal, grain, dried distillers grain, calcined coke, salt and soy products. The best shipping year ever in Mount Vernon -- and in the 57-year history of the Ports of Indiana -- was recorded last year. You can connect to more about the record start to 2018 by clicking here.

In an interview with Inside INdiana Business, Mount Vernon Port Director Phil Wilzbacher says the momentum looks like it could continue into the near future.
