The university says the environmental engineering major will be available to students beginning in the fall of 2019.
The interdisciplinary degree program will provide opportunities for collaboration between faculty in engineering and other programs on campus, according to the university. Students enrolled in the program will use classroom and laboratory experiences to learn how to prevent, reduce, and treat various forms of pollution.
"The addition of an environmental engineering major allows the College of Engineering to provide a new and exciting program in an emerging field that both fulfills our mission and a significant societal need," said Eric Johnson, dean of the College of Engineering. "Whether working for industrial companies, consulting firms, or regulatory agencies, our graduates will be at the forefront of solving the environmental challenges that we face now and in the future."
Valpo cites data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which projects an 8 percent increase in environmental engineering jobs between 2016 and 2026.
