The loans and grants will be used to upgrade and rebuild rural water infrastructure in Bartholomew, Fulton and Randolph counties. Indiana is one of 24 states awarded funds through the Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant program.
Assistant to the Secretary for Rural Development Anne Hazlett said "USDA is committed to being a strong partner to rural communities in building their futures. All people – regardless of their zip code – need modern, reliable infrastructure to thrive, and we have found that when we address this need, many other challenges in rural places become much more manageable."
The Indiana recipients include:
- The Town of Akron – a $2,114,000 loan used for separating a combined sanitary sewer collection system
- The City of Union City – a $8.3 million loan and a $4.7 million grant to upgrade a wastewater treatment plant and collection system.
- The Southwestern Bartholomew Water Corp. – a $2.3 million loan to upgrade the community’s water system.
