The Republic reports the Bartholomew County Commissioners could potentially issue a bond for $8 million for the new facility, though the project could cost less.
A structural assessment completed last year says the current garage is "functionally obsolete," according to the publication. Commissioner Chairman Larry Kleinhenz said during a work session earlier this week the city of Columbus is interested in purchasing the current facility.
The site being considered by the commissioners for the new garage is currently owned by the Bartholomew County Solid Waste Management District. Developing a new garage on the property would come with upfront costs, including $150,000 to purchase the land and $500,000 for design work, according to The Republic.
The commissioners are recommending using funds from a county economic development income tax plan that is currently not earmarked for other projects. That would generate $1.4 million each year for the project. A final decision on the project would be made by the Bartholomew County Council.
