FORT WAYNE -

Two local foundations in Fort Wayne have awarded a total of $650,000 to the University of Saint Francis. The grants will help fund renovations to the university's Achatz Hall of Science and Research Center.

The English-Bonter-Mitchell Foundation has awarded $500,000, while the Edward M. Wilson Foundation has granted $150,000 to the project. USF says the grants bring the project to more than halfway to its fundraising goal.

The renovations aim to make Achatz Hall a modern science laboratory center with specialized science labs, dedicated research space, and preparation and storage areas. USF says the work will provide students with the opportunity to conduct innovative research projects on campus and also allow the university to partner with local companies in shared research projects.

"These generous grants are a wonderful example of the Fort Wayne community's support of our students," said USF President Sister Elise Kriss. "We are very grateful to these foundations for their commitment to enhancing our students' education experience, especially in the sciences."

USF broke ground on the project last July. The renovations are scheduled to be complete by the end of 2019.
