Pogue’s Run Grocer, which opened on the city’s near east side in 2010, announced on Facebook that sales are at the lowest they’ve ever been and "the store has reached a point where it cannot sustain itself and the people who are carrying most of the burden are the employees."
Pogue’s Run has focused on selling local produce and organic and responsibly-sourced foods. Its parent co-op, Indy Food Co-op II, is a member-owner organization and its board of directors said Saturday that due to low sales, "the store has been unable to cover the payroll for the past pay period and for the current week that will conclude on Sunday." The message to members and customers asks "that you please help us give our staff a dignified end to this chapter of their lives by helping us liquidate all of our product. All money raised will go to our staff and to local vendors who we have outstanding debt with."
Board members, the co-op says, will be on-hand Monday to answer questions about the decision to cease operations.
