IUPUI has selected Jesse Perez Mendez as the founding dean of the School of Education. Mendez, who previously served as associate dean for academic affairs at the University of Central Florida’s College of Education and Human Performance, is slated to begin his new role in August.

Mendez’ appointment still requires approval from the Indiana University Board of Trustees. In addition to his work at UCF, Mendez has also held leadership roles at Oklahoma State University and Northern Oklahoma College.

"Jesse Perez Mendez is equipped with the ideal skill set to lead the IUPUI School of Education," said IUPUI Chancellor Nasser Paydar. "As we embark on an exciting new era for the school, Dr. Mendez’s experience in educational instruction and administration will strengthen our position as a leader in research on urban education and in preparing educational professionals for success, especially in the urban environment."

Mendez is not a stranger to the IU School of Education. He earned his Ph.D. in higher education and student affairs from the school, and also received his Juris Doctor from the IU Maurer School of Law.

The School of Education previously included units both at IUPUI and the university’s Bloomington campus. However, IU announced in August plans to split the school into separate institutions on each campus. IUPUI says having its own school of education will enhance programming and the university’s reputation in urban education through partnerships with Indianapolis Public Schools and other partner school districts.
