Indiana, Metro Areas Stand Out in Life Sciences Report

A new survey shows Indiana is again a top-rated state for employment in the life sciences industry. The results from a bi-annual report from the Biotechnology Industry Organization and TEConomy Partners show tens of thousands of Hoosier jobs are connected to subsectors including agriculture feedstock and chemicals, drugs and pharmaceuticals, and medical devices and equipment. Other categories include research, testing and medical laboratories and biosciences-related distribution.

"Investment, Innovation and Job Creation in a Growing U.S. Bioscience Industry," as the report is titled, identifies seven metropolitan areas in Indiana where the industry has a presence: Bloomington, Evansville, Indianapolis, Lafayette, Michigan City, South Bend and Terre Haute. Indiana came in ninth in the U.S. in terms of biosciences-related patents.

David Johnson, chief executive officer of BioCrossroads, the state’s life sciences initiative, says "Indiana’s life sciences industry continues to be a national leader, especially when it comes to employment, industry concentration and patents. This report showcases the sector’s strength as a truly shared Indiana asset – from our large cities to our smaller communities and from research and development to manufacturing and distribution. The collaborative efforts by BioCrossroads, our companies, and academic institutions are what make our State unique and help fuel the advancement of the industry." BioCrossroads says the industry includes more than 58,000 employees and has an economic impact of $78 billion in the state.
