Saint Mary’s Adding Track and Field Program
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College near Terre Haute is adding to its athletic department. The school says it will launch women’s and men’s track and field teams beginning in the 2019-2020 season.
The track and field program will include a full array of events, according to the school. Zach Whitkanack, who currently serves as a coach for the school’s cross country program, will become the head coach of the track and field teams.
"The addition of the women’s and men’s track and field teams fulfills another goal in our strategic plan," said SMWC President Dottie King. "Thoughtful addition of athletics teams supports growth and enhances the student experience at The Woods."
SMWC says it is partnering with the Vigo County School Corp. to use the track and field facilities at West Vigo High School in West Terre Haute. The school says the track and field program will also benefit its cross country teams by helping student-athletes stay in shape during what would otherwise be a quiet period for them.
"The cross country program will benefit from this because it will allow the student-athletes to compete year round," Whitkanack said. "We have many runners very pumped about having the opportunity to participate in track and field.
The school says the program brings its total number of sports teams to 13.
