The study, conducted by Kentucky-based Certec Inc., says more than 1 million destination travelers came to Johnson County last year.
Festival Country Indiana commissioned an economic impact study to set baseline numbers in order to determine the growth of tourism through future studies. The study also reported an additional 1.35 pass-through travelers. The tourism industry led to more than 2,900 jobs in the county and generated more than $60 million in tax revenue.
"This study confirms what we hear from local attractions and other tourism-related businesses who track the zip codes of their customers – that they reap big financial benefits from people outside of Johnson County,” said Kenneth Kosky, director of tourism for Festival Country Indiana. “The study also shows room for growth. Since Johnson County’s tourism agency is new and only began destination marketing in 2017, our goals are to boost the number of destination travelers and to get pass-through travelers to spend more. Future economic impact studies will let us know how much tourism is growing."
The results of the study were released as part of National Travel & Tourism Week and Visit Indiana Week.
