The University of Indianapolis’ School of Education will have a new dean this summer. The school will be led by John Kuykendall III, whose term officially begins July 1.

He most recently was a tenured associate professor of education and the director of the School of Education at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Kuykendall oversaw 27 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in teacher education and educational leadership in Little Rock. He previously was a faculty member at Marquette, where he directed the College of Student Affairs Program.

“I look forward to leading the University of Indianapolis School of Education. As Dean, I will provide forward-thinking leadership that will help equip teachers and administrators for the challenges and demands of an ever-changing educational landscape. I hope to serve our future educators tirelessly, and I am excited to be working with an outstanding, transformative faculty,” Dr. Kuykendall said.

Grants recently awarded to the School of Education have allowed faculty to establish breakthrough programs such as Teach Today: Transform Tomorrow, which focuses on recruiting high school students interested in STEM. Kuykendall’s research has focused on getting first generation students college-ready, developing new models for college recruitment and how social class structures impact student’s abilities to be ready for college.
