The Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority has approved matching grants for projects in East Chicago and Hammond. East Chicago will receive over $8.5 million for Phase III of its Waterfront Revitalization Initiative, and Hammond officials will use $100,000 for demolition and construction for a new rail station.

East Chicago’s funding is the final installment for the waterfront projects, with RDA previously providing over $30 million for earlier phases of the work. Guthrie Street was completely reworked with new pavement, sidewalks and infrastructure. The project also includes IT conduit installation and street lighting. The project also encompasses the Fitzsimmons retail project, near Unity Plaza, that will offer 19,000 square feet of new mixed residential and commercial space.

Hammond requested funding to help with the $622,318 cost to demolish 27 properties for the proposed Gateway commuter rail station. The Chicago Street land was previously marked for transit-oriented redevelopment. INDOT is also providing funding for the project.
