Different Tax Certificate Sale Decisions For Mounds Mall, Wigwam
Despite opposition from the family that owns it, the Mounds Mall building will stay on track for a tax certificate sale. Our partners at The Herald-Bulletin report the motion did not receive a vote for the April 9 tax certificate sale from the Madison County Commissioners.
At the same meeting Tuesday, all three commissioners voted in favor of removing the Wigwam property from the sale list. The decision will give Indianapolis-based developer BWI time to work on settling multiple appeals concerning the assessed value of the iconic former home of Anderson High School basketball. The current owners owe more than $200,000 in back taxes and are fighting to have the value of the property lowered as massive redevelopment plans have stalled. The Herald-Bulletin reports BWI is slated to transfer Wigwam ownership to nonprofit JobSource Inc. by the end of the year.
The Cook family, which owns the Mound Mall and the property where it’s located as separately-taxed entities, owe $611,000 in property taxes on the building. The publication reports Jonathan Cook says the tax certificate buyer would have to negotiate a land lease with the family after the purchase.
