A longtime Indianapolis television news anchor has announced his retirement. John Stehr, who began working at WTHR-TV in 1995, will anchor his final newscast June 20 after more than four decades in broadcasting. Though he is stepping down from his daily role at WTHR, Stehr will continue to be a regular contributor for various community events and special coverage at the station.

Stehr came to WTHR after serving as a network correspondent and anchor for CBS News in New York. He was a founding anchor of CNBC. Stehr also worked as an anchor and reporter at local news stations throughout the country, including a sting at WISH-TV in Indianapolis.

"I am enormously grateful to my WTHR family and the many people I have worked with over the years. Together, we have journeyed through the highs and lows of our community and country," said Stehr. "After forty years in the business and a few months to reflect following my heart surgery last year, it really gave me perspective as to the importance of family, health and other ways to contribute.”"

WTHR News Director Kathy Hostetter says Stehr will play a role in the station’s coverage of the Indy 500 festivities, election night, and the annual broadcast of the Circle of Lights celebration in November.
