Two high-profile educational initiatives have received final approval from the Higher Learning Commission. Kaplan University’s transition to Purdue University Global has received the final green light, as has realignment of IPFW and its subsequent name change to Purdue University Fort Wayne. The HLC is a Chicago-based independent corporation that accredits post-secondary institutions in 19 states.

Purdue Global’s main campus, the university said in a release, will be in Indianapolis. It is expected to officially launch in April, which will be one year after Purdue announced its acquisition of the online school. Purdue President Mitch Daniels says Purdue Global’s move forward "opens a new era for our institution, with the opportunity to expand our land-grant mission to millions of adult students around the country. That opportunity brings with it the responsibility to provide the highest quality online education, not only to our new adult learners, but to all residential and online Boilermaker students. Starting today, Purdue University hopes to take a leading role in online learning nationally." Kaplan’s enrollment currently totals some 30,000 students, all of which the university says will "seamlessly transition" to Purdue Global.

The IPFW-to-Purdue University Fort Wayne changes are several years in the making and include a state Legislative Services Agency study that recommended splitting management of the jointly-run IPFW campus and programs between Purdue and Indiana University. The recommendation was followed and the blueprint for Purdue Fort Wayne and Indiana University Fort Wayne was launched mid-2017. The Purdue Fort Wayne name will take effect July 1. Chancellor Ron Elsenbaumer says "the dedicated people across our campus, as well as our colleagues from the Indiana University and Purdue University Systems, have worked diligently to ensure a solid foundation for the future of both institutions in Fort Wayne. The continued collaboration between Indiana University Fort Wayne and Purdue University Fort Wayne is critical to the future success of both institutions. As we transition to being separate and independent – yet equally committed – partners, I encourage everyone to remember our number one priority – our students."
