The company, which is considered the nation’s largest and longest continually-operating inland ship builder, says decreased demand caused the decision. In a notice to the state, Jeffboat says 226 employees will be affected.
In November, the 180-year-old business announced 278 jobs would be cut for the same reason as this time around. In both instances, Jeffboat says the layoffs will be permanent. November’s cuts are expected to be complete by the end of March, while the most recent round is slated to run through the end of April. Jeffboat says it does not intend to close its facility, which is located on the banks of the Ohio River.
The website of One Southern Indiana, the economic development organization representing Clark and Floyd counties, currently lists Jeffboat as one of the 10 largest employers in the region with more than 1,000. The company had some 13,000 employees during World War II.
