Kmart Details Layoffs Amid Store Closure
Illinois-based Kmart Corp. has provided more information regarding the closure of one of its Indiana locations announced last week. In a notice to the state, the company says 44 employees at its store on the southeast side of Indianapolis will be laid off beginning in early April.
Kmart says the closure and layoffs will be permanent. The affected employees will be let go during a two-week period beginning April 8. Kmart parent Sears Holding Corp. (Nasdaq: SHLD) said last week eligible employees will receive severance pay and have the opportunity to apply for positions at other area Sears or Kmart stores.
Sears Holding Corp. is closing 103 Sears and Kmart stores nationwide, including three stores in the Hoosier state. In addition to the Indy store, the Kmart location in Bloomington and Sears store in Evansville will be shuttered.
The company has not provided details on the number of employees affected by the closure of the Bloomington and Evansville stores.
