Robert Stochel was convicted in May on a charge of mail fraud after stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from a receivership under his control.
The office of U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Indiana Thomas Kirsch says Stochel operated the scheme between 2001 and June 2012. Stochel was not only accused of stealing the money, but also attempting to hide the theft from the court that appointed him receiver and the beneficiaries of the receivership.
"Attorneys are entrusted with a great deal of power and authority to act on behalf of and in the best interests of their clients," said Kirsch. "Those who do not, but instead engage in criminal conduct, will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
In addition to his prison sentence, Stochel was ordered to pay more than $229,000 in restitution.
