William Hickey, led St. Mary’s from 1986 to 1997, died last week in Florida. Hickey was 81.
Hickey, who served the university in capacities including academic vice president and dean of faculty before becoming president, spent 40 years with the northern Indiana college. Accomplishments during his tenure include shifting all decision-making to a single board of trustees, boosting the endowment from $20 million to $75 million and launching the Division of Mission and Center for Spirituality.
Current President Jan Cervelli says "Saint Mary’s wouldn’t be the strong institution it is today without the leadership of Dr. Hickey. He helped strengthen ties with the Sisters of the Holy Cross, reaffirming the College’s founding mission, and extended it to new generations of students through increases in financial aid and a commitment to ensuring the highest academic standards."
Hickey held master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Notre Dame. A statement from Notre Dame President Emeritus Edward Malloy reads: "Bill Hickey was a Notre Dame graduate, a highly successful faculty member at Saint Mary’s College and an outstanding administrator. During our respective years as president, we had a close and mutually supportive relationship. Most of all, though, Bill was a really good person who left a wonderful legacy."
Saint Mary’s says a service to honor Hickey will be held in the spring at the Church of Our Lady of Loretto on campus in the spring.
