Indiana State University’s board of trustees will this week vote to make Deborah Curtis the school’s 12th president. Curtis, who is currently provost and chief learning officer at the University of Central Missouri, will succeed Dan Bradley, who is stepping down next year after more than nine years in office.

The school says its presidential search committee selected Curtis through a national search, which drew more than 70 candidates.

Curtis has been in her role at the University of Central Missouri since 2012. Her previous experience includes roles as dean of the College of Education at Illinois State University and director of the school’s Cecilia J. Lauby Teacher Education Center. Indiana State says Curtis will be the first woman and second ISU graduate to serve as president. She earned her Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from Indiana State. Curtis also holds a master’s degree in music education from the University of Illinois and a bachelor’s in music education from MacMurray College.

Curtis also spent a year teaching at University School, which is Indiana State’s laboratory school. She says that experience led her to want to pursue her doctorate and a career in higher education, adding she is "a proud alum and am thrilled to be returning to ISU to serve in this role."

The board is expected to vote to confirm Curtis’ appointment during a special meeting on November 15. She will likely assume the role in early January.
