The panel was established as a result of House Enrolled Act 1003, which also authorized the replacement of the ISTEP exam.
The panel was tasked with making recommendations for graduation pathway options to replace graduation exams. In its final recommendation report, the panel said the purpose of the recommendations is to "create an educated and talented workforce able not just to meet the needs of business and higher education, but able to succeed in all postsecondary endeavors."
"I am very excited for the future of students in Indiana," said Byron Ernest, who chaired the panel. "Through ten meetings, we have convened and worked with collaborators to create opportunities for Hoosier students to choose a pathway they believe will help prepare them for post-secondary success."
The panel highlighted three graduation pathway requirements, all of which must be met by students beginning with the graduation class of 2023. They include:
- High School Diploma
- Learn and Demonstrate Employability Skills
- Postsecondary-Ready Competencies
The panel said students would be able to choose a path that fits their postsecondary goals, rather than take a "one-size-fits-all" exam.
The State Board of Education will review the recommendations and vote to adopt them next month. You can view further details on the recommendations in the document below:
