Indiana’s Research Universities Focus of Study

The results suggest Indiana University, Purdue University and the University of Notre Dame generate some $1.3 billion annually in research expenditures. The report by TEConomic Partners and focused on major functional areas including knowledge expansion and innovation, economic development, human capital and quality-of-life.
The report shows the three universities have a combined 1.44 million living alumni and contribute resources that touch all 92 Indiana counties. BioCrossroads Chief Executive Officer David Johnson says "these premier universities represent critical components within our economic ecosystem to produce and attract talent, anchor our communities and participate in innovation for the future prosperity of Indiana, and our country. Their role is increasingly important in strengthening our society and economy, and the report highlights the need to advance their unique contributions to our state."
Other key highlights include:
- The universities’ combined enrollment was higher than 132,000.
- Indiana institutions produced more than 59,000 academic publications between 2012 and 2016, which accounts for 2.9 percent of all U.S. academic publications. Indiana makes up 2.1 percent of the total U.S. population.
The report, which can be found at BioCrossroads’ report and educational information website, Biointellex, suggested Indiana has area for improvement when it comes to securing external research funding.
