Medical Company Closing Mishawaka Facility
New Jersey-based Ascensia Diabetes Care Inc. has detailed plans to close its facility in Mishawaka. In a notice to the state, the company says the closure will leave more than 100 employees out of work.
Ascensia says the decision to close the facility is due to "changing requirements for our business," but did not elaborate. A request for comment was not returned Friday. In all, 113 people will be laid off because of the closure.
The company says the facility is expected to be fully closed by September 30, 2018. The first round of layoffs will occur December 29 with more layoffs taking place through September. Some unionized employees may have bumping rights, but there will be none for non-union employees.
Ascensia makes a variety of products designed to help people with diabetes, including a line of blood glucose monitoring systems.
