The award is given to cities and towns in three population-based categories as part of an initiative designed to identify potential savings, promote economic competitiveness and serve as role models for environmental protection.
This year’s winners are Fishers, Westfield and Whiting, each of which also won in 2016. The organization, formerly known as the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns, says the communities earned the highest score possible in their population category to earn the award.
"On top of everything a city or town leader must do to ensure the long-term health and viability of their community, it’s so impressive that our Green Communities of the Year are able to aggressively dedicate themselves to sustainable practices," said Matt Greller, CEO of Aim. "I applaud their efforts and believe all Hoosiers will benefit from their dedication to greener local governments."
Municipalities participating in the initiative had to fill out a 51-question survey. Fishers won in the 50,000+ category, while Westfield won for cities with populations between 10,000 and 50,000. Whiting won in the under 10,000 category.
The winners received their awards at Aim’s annual awards luncheon in Evansville.
